VENETO PAINTER OF THE XVIII / XIX Follower of GABRIEL BELLA (Venice, 1730 - 1799) View of Venice animated by gondolas and sailboats Oil on canvas, cm. 38 x 55. 2 - Not signed Size with frame, cm. 48. 5 x 65. 5 x 5 approx. NOTES: Publication of the catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Unsigned work. Certificate of Guarantee and Lawful Origin. Work with gilded frame (defects) : Magnificent view of the Grand Canal animated by gondolas and sailing boats. Due to the extremely realistic quality and the typology of the boats and figures that animate the painting, the dating to the second half of the 19th century is limited and the reference to a follower of the illustrious Canaletto prototypes who is recognized in the painter Gabriel Bella (Venice, 1730 - 1799) . This master, wrongly considered a minor of the lagoon art scene, is known for representing feasts, festivals and celebrations, offering us extraordinary insights into the daily life of the republic. The artist takes his cue from engravings of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, adapting them to his personal experience, so by comparing the oldest engravings with his paintings and with what we see today, it is possible to grasp the changes in the city in centuries. His production renders his views with narrative verve, in fact, while maintaining in most cases the points of view of tradition, the author intervenes freely in describing trade, navigation and daily activities. The scarce biographical information indicates that Bella was active between 1740 and 1782 and enrolled in the fraglia in Venice in 1760. Forgotten for years, her name re-emerges from oblivion during the twentieth century, when it is rightly rediscovered thanks to her canvases. where it is possible to admire life in Venice in the second half of the 18th century, from the interior to the public scenes of the great ceremonies. Much of his production is found in the Querini-Stampalia art gallery in Venice, where there are about seventy works. Bella often paints her Venetian views starting from the engravings of Canaletto, Carlevarijs and Marieschi, then inserting the characters and describing a given event. This image does not refer in particular to the original works of the great landscape masters of the past, represented by the views of the Grand Canal animated by gondolas and sailing boats, a theme repeatedly reproduced by the great Venetian artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The boats and the characters, in fact, change in this context, and so does the point of view captured with the optical camera. However, the result is always extraordinary and perfect. This lot highlights the artist's talent in capturing light with perfection. The treatment of the brush strokes depicting water is of a modern character. Here the lagoon attracts the eye through the reflection of light in the water. The masts with their colored sails seem to move to the rhythm of the water. On the gondolas and boats, the chatter of the figures. In the background is the city of Venice. Regarding its state of conservation, the canvas is in fairly fair general conditions considering the time of the painting, the pictorial surface is in patina. We can see - in Wood's light - some small restorations, a slight unveiling and oxidation of the pictorial surface, however nothing really relevant. There are no conservative problems and it does not seem to need urgent interventions. In sunlight, a fine crackle is visible compared to the time. The measures of the canvas are cm. 38 x 55. 2. The work is framed in a gilded and worked frame, and therefore is sold with the frame (the measurements of the frame are approx. 48. 5 x 65. 5 x 5 cm, presence of defects) .
