Scuola Veneto-Cretese (XVI) - Madonna con bambino e sante

[ translate ]

\Artist: Scuola Veneto-Cretese (XVI)
Technique: Oil on board\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 52. 3_2. 5_40_cm
The Venetian-Cretan school was an important pictorial school, also known under the name of post-Byzantine, a movement that flourished on the island of Crete, under the control of the Serenissima of Venice between 1204 and 1669. Our sixteenth-century panel (but we do not exclude, from some details, that it could also be from the end of the previous century) , is a rare example of artistic composition of this school, and represents the Virgin Mary with the child in her arms, between two saints who we imagine to be Saint Lucia on the right , and Saint Catherine of Alexandria to the left. In the bright ocher background, typical of this school, you can see some mountains in the distance and, a very important detail, during the cleaning of the work the drawing of other mountains reappeared (top right) , which the artist then decided not to complete. The professional restoration, carried out in a specialized laboratory, has brought to light the beautiful original chromatism of the work, which measures cm. 52. 3 x 40. A certificate of lawful origin from my collection is provided. ATTENTION: for shipments outside the U. E. shipping times will be longer and the unspecified customs fees will be charged to the buyer in the country of arrival.
