Important painting of the Emilian school

Painting from the second half of the 17th century

“Allegory of Charity”

- 1650/1680, oil on canvas

- 88 x 65 cm in frame

In this majestic painting, Professor Ferdinando Arisi, a well-known Italian art historian, refers to a portraiture attributable to the style of Pier Francesco Cittadini, or Pierfrancesco Cittadini, known as the Milanese or the Franceschino (Milan, 1616 – Bologna, 1681) , while as regards the putti the reference is to Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan, 1609 – Milan, 1662) and to Carlo Cignani (Bologna, 15 May 1628 – Forlì, 6 September 1719) .

The composition in this work is very balanced and wisely regulated in colour, of quality above all in form while the scene, represented here, intelligently developed with never excessive colours, undoubtedly falls within the theme par excellence of the painting of that period, that is in the so-called Baroque painting of which the Bolognese school includes several prominent masters.
