At dusk the family gathered in the camp near the banks of the Chiemsee. On the horizon you can see the church of Gstadt, whose bells ring at the end of the working day. With her eyes closed and her hands clasped together, the young peasant woman is absorbed in prayer, a rake in her arms. The grandmother turned even more intensely to the church bells in devotion. She kneels with her shoulders to the viewer, her hands crossed on her chest. The grandfather also takes a break, he took off his hat from his head, full of respect for the moment. In their prayer they palpably put all the gratitude for the good harvest of the past day. The atmosphere of the moment is solemn but ambivalent. However reverent the adults may appear, the children appear relaxed and undisturbed, the meaning of the rite has not yet been understood by them. The girl on the right looks at her grandmother in prayer with obvious amazement. The little girl on the left is also standing with her hands clasped together, but it feels more like a game, imitating what adults are doing. Meanwhile, a child has fun in the grass with his dog. The youngest, just old enough to stand, boldly looks at his mother.
