\Artist: Seguace di Joos van Cleeve, fine XVI inizio XVII secolo
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 89_7_79_cm
Madonna Lactans or "Madonna del latte". Netherlands, Antwerp school. Late 16th/early 17th century. Oil on canvas. Follower of Joos van Cleeve. The Nursing Virgin and Child. The iconography dates back to the 14th century, when the Virgin was no longer seen as a medieval queen on the throne, but as a mother nursing her child in family intimacy. On the windowsill there are fruits: an apple, a pear, a walnut. The apple symbolises to the original sin, the pear is the symbol of Christ's love for humanity, while the nutshell alludes to the cross, and the part inside the nut - the flesh of Christ. Madonna is wearing a veil similar to a turban. The child, depicted with a full, abundant anatomy, looks at the viewer with an intense gaze. Notes on the condition: a cleaning of the paint has been carried out. There is a pictorial retouching on the background and on the forehead of the Madonna and small tweaks on the clothes. The painting on the face and body of the baby Jesus is in good condition. The frame is antique, but readapted, in painted wood. Size with frame: 89 x 79 x 7 cm Size without frame: 72 x 63 x 2 cm
