Set 3 Antique Tibetan Copper Tea Vessels Dragon Design

Antique matching handmade copper Tea set of three vessels, Tibet, 19th - early 20th century.

There are reposed dragon designs on the sides of the vessels, the neck and shoulder of the vessels are finely worked with a variety of motifs including Himalayan-Buddhistic dragons. Chains are attached the lids to the handle of both pots. The silver is likely to be an alloy less than sterling standard as is typical of Himalayan silver-work. The base has been made in upper and lower sections and then soldered together. The seam and the attendant solder are also evident at the handles. Overall, this is a fine, sculptural example.

The large teapot is c.10" [c.25.4cm] tall including lid; smaller pot [milk pot] is 6.3/4" [c.17.2cm] tall, the other vessel is c.5.1/2" [c.14cm] There are some minor dents associated with age and use and an overall excellent genuine patina. Very good condition.

Such tea sets are also regarded as status symbols in Tibet.

Tea in Tibet was an important staple in the diet throughout the day. The tea was made from Chinese black tea bricks, butter from yaks and salt were then added and churned together to give a thick, soup-like liquid.

This tea set would have come from an aristocratic family or perhaps a wealthier monastery.
