Sèvres Porcelain, A Sèvres Exhibition Pâte-sur-Pâte Celadon Glazed Porcelain Vase (circa 1867)
An Important Sèvres Exhibition Pâte-sur-Pâte Celadon Glazed Porcelain Vase, 1867 Marks: (N-crown-67-DECORE SEVRES), S.62, D 58-7 Signed: Regnier, 1867 15-7/8 x 8 x 6-1/4 inches (40.3 x 20.3 x 15.9 cm) The vase of modified shield shape having flared neck flanked by gilt-enriched figural gaping lion mask and ram's horn handles, body superbly painted and hand tooled with seated putti resting atop wispy clouds holding attributes of the summer seasons, the putti encased within beaded quatrefoil panels linked at the sides with roundels featuring further symbols of the Seasons including sacrificial urn and freshly cut wheat, the stepped socle and rims enriched with gilt bands of vines and foliage. The present lot relates to a number of celadon ground pieces which were presented at the 1867 Exposition Universelle de Paris and then later through the Mobilier de la Couronne at the palaces of the Tulleries, Compiègne and the Elysée. There are two entries in the Sèvres archival resources, 'la magasin de vente', dated April 1864 describing: 'deux vase à double culot fond sous émail décor en or figures d'enfants et guirlands de fleurs en pâte d'application - noted with a cost of 800 francs each. (Registre Vv7, folio 24, no. 28.) Registre Vbb 12, folio 186 verso bears evidence that an identical pair of vases to the present lot, sold Christie's New York, Sale 1716: 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics, 24 October 2006, lot 160, were presented at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1867 and then delivered to the L'Elysée, Residence Officielle in December and were likely to have been put before the disposition of Emperor Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie. The signature to the lower waist is that of Ferdinand Régnier, who along with Leopold Jules Gély, was responsible for the development of pâte-sur-pâte techniques at Sèvres.

Condition Report: Overall good condition and presentation with slightly uneven foot, tight hairline visible to one lion mask, scattered pits, fleabites, and flakes to lion masks and ram's horn handles, some toning and rubbing to gilding, and minor shelfwear to underside.
