Shirvan
Mid 19th century, 322 x 127 cm, East Caucasus
A gorgeous Shirvan woven in clear and brilliant colours. Twelve large hooked diamonds are aligned on the central axis of the midnight blue field; pairs of smaller diamonds are offset against them; and geometric, stylised trees fill the gaps along the sides. The wide border section includes a white central band of large star-shaped blossoms. Two red minor borders embellished with rosettes and stars are accompanied by an inner and an outer reciprocal trefoil border. – Very well preserved except for minor repiled areas, the original finishes survive all around.
