Sican / Lambayeque Blackware Vessel w/ Face

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1000 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished blackware pottery vessel with a spherical body, a bulbous neck, a conical spout, and a bifurcated strap handle joining neck to body, all atop a wide flared foot. The neck boasts an abstract anthropomorphic face with raised almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, thin incised lips, and nubbin-shaped ears, with the spout doubling as the projecting headdress. Size: 4.5" W x 7.7" H (11.4 cm x 19.6 cm).

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA

Minor abrasions to foot, body, and neck, with light fading to original black coloration, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
