Signed 19th C. Hattone Painting, Cowboy at Dusk

American untitled oil on canvas, ca. 1850s to 1870s CE. Signed "E. Hattone" (with a backwards 'E') at lower right. A picturesque painting featuring a cowboy on his horse who is drinking from a stream with another horse, likely used to carry his belongings or wares, beside him. The landscape is delineated in the style of American luminism, with its mesmerizing light effects, mastery of aerial perspective, and mirror-like quality of the reflective waters. Note the dreamy quality of the skies - clearly during dawn or dusk - with beautiful mauve, rose, and periwinkle hues - as well as the golden glow beyond of light either rising or dissipating in moments. Set in an ornate giltwood frame. A wonderful example of 19th century American art. Size: 20" W x 16.25" H (50.8 cm x 41.3 cm); 30.5" W x 26.5" H (77.5 cm x 67.3 cm) framed

Condition Report: Canvas was relined at some point, but not recently. Some lifting at edges of the canvas. Canvas shows some areas of waviness and minute tears at peripheries, a few old repairs, and can use some cleaning, but the colors and imagery are still strong with nice craquelure. Minor scuffs and nicks to framing, but overall still quite nice. Age wear to stretcher bars visible on verso.
