Signed 20th C. Hawaiian Wood Bowl - Mag / Milo 96
North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. mid-20th century CE. Signed "Mag / Milo '96'."A lovely wood bowl, hand-carved from the wood of a milo tree to display smooth, towering walls that gently slant inwards to a flared rim, all sitting upon a flat, circular base. Boasting a golden tan hue, the beautiful vessel is naturally adorned by the fine graining of the wood, which nicely complements its graceful form. Size: 5.2" in diameter x 6.3" H (13.2 cm x 16 cm)
Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Prior to the 19th century, they were made with stone and coral tools, carved from kou, milo, and kamani trees most commonly.
