Signed Picasso Etching - Vollard Suite #149

Pablo Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973), "Sculpteurs, Modeles et Sculpture", # 149, The Suite Vollard (Vollard Suite), etching published by Ambroise Vollard (French, 1867-1939) in 1939, with full margins, signed in black on lower right. The Suite Vollard is a set of 100 etchings by Pablo Picasso, rendered in a Neoclassical Style and named for Ambroise Vollard, the art dealer who commissioned them. In exchange, Vollard offered paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cezanne. Picasso worked on the series from the spring of 1933 until sometime in 1937. It took two more years for the printmaker Roger Lacouriere to finish printing the 230 full sets; however, due to Vollard's death in 1939 and the circumstances of World War II, they only came to the art market in the 1950s. Size: 10.51" W x 7.64" H (26.7 cm x 19.4 cm); sheet measures 17.75" W x 13.375" H (45.1 cm x 34 cm)

This etching has been authenticated by Denenberg Fine Arts, West Hollywood, CA, est. 1965 (picture of appraisal shown).

This etching hammered for 5,000 GBP ($12,805) at Christie's, London, 25 Oct. 2007, Lot 113. Another hammered for 20,000 CHF ($19,210) at Kornfeld Galerie & Cie, 5 June 2008, lot 556. Another hammered for $7,387 at Cornette de Saint-Cyr Bruxelles, 25 June 2019.

Provenance: Casa d'Arte Bragaglia; ex-Mr. Anton Giulio Bragaglia - Accompanied by document in which Mr. Anton Giulio Bragaglia declares that he sold 36 etchings from the Vollard Suite to current owner's grandfather Arturo Tonnarelli Grassetti.
