Ellen Maria Carpenter 1830-1906/07 Birth place: Killingly, CT. Death place: Boston, MA. Addresses: Boston, 1858 and after. Profession: Landscape and portrait painter; teacher. Studied: Milford H.S.; Thomas Edwards; Lowell Institute in Boston; Robert Fleury and Lefebvre, Paris, 1867, 1873. Exhibited: Boston AC, 1881. Comments: Popular landscape painter and art teacher in Boston.. Visited Europe 1867 and 1873. Sources: G&W; Who's Who in America (1906/07) cited the birth date as above, while CAB and Clement and Hutton give 1830 and 1831, respectively; the approximation of her death date is based on the disappearance of her name from Boston CD after 1909.
She was known to have painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire as well as the South, Pacific Coast.
The following update was provided in June of 2006 by John R. Carpenter a Carpenter Family Genealogist who is a 5th cousin, 4 times removed from the artist. 1) Ellen Maria Carpenter was born 28 Nov 1830 in Killingly, Middlesex, CT of Oliver Carpenter Jr. (b. 1793 CT) and Amy Smith (b. abt 1793 of CT). She died in Boston, Suffolk, MA. Ellen is a descendant of William Carpenter (b. 1605 England) the immigrant who settled in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA in 1638. The following update was provided in June of 2006 by John R. Carpenter a Carpenter Family Genealogist who is a 5th cousin, 4 times removed from the artist.
