Singing Cupid Amor, Belle Epoque German Sculpture 1880s

[ translate ]

Large antique Belle Epoque era German porcelain sculpture, 'Singing Cupid' [Eros, Amor], 1880s, the complex multi-part work, underglaze hand paining. Cupid is sitting on a stand carried by three Aries on three Aries legs. The small vase behind the Cupid is decorated with pink roses on the elaborate stand.

Cupid's weapon of Love, bow and darts, are laying on the bottom of the stand. Singing weaponless Cupid may represent the passion of love interrupted by the aesthetic and [or] sensual pleasure, maybe Art.

There is a hand written number '7.', additional three under-glaze scratched numbers '1313'; '70' and '40'. Two underglaze blind stamps. One of them, 'RECHTLICH GESCHUTZT', means in English ALL RIGHTS RESERVED and another blind underglaze mark with unreadable first word, [???] 'VORBEHALTEN', which could mean All Rights Reserved. No other markings.

The entire composition including the stand is c.13" tall [c.34cm]; c.8" [205mm] maximal wide; the round base is c. 6.1/4" [16cm] across at the bottom. The left arm of Cupid is visibly attached [repair?], as well as roughly attached wings [see pictures], otherwise very good condition.

The figurine was one of the decoration and presentation pieces in the porcelain store closed in the 1930s. The store was specialized on the European porcelain. During the era of Industrial exhibitions [1870s-1900s], European porcelain companies created unique special pieces for the decoration of their commercial exhibition pavilions, and sold them after the exhibition. Such pieces were often unmarked because they did not represent a production line. This figure appears to be such unique expo decoration piece.
