Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), Portrait of a gentleman

[ translate ]

Manner of Sir Thomas Lawrence (British, 1769-1830) Portrait of a gentleman Oil on canvas 29 x 23-1/4 inches (73.7 x 59.1 cm) Property from the Estate of Jane Akin Brasch, Dallas, Texas Historian and novelist Sir Walter Scott once said that "next to seeing the great men themselves, nothing can equal beholding them on the canvas of Lawrence." With his confident, painterly approach, Sir Thomas Lawrence was regarded as one of the foremost portraitists in all of Europe. The present work is certainly informed by this practice. The sitter, dressed in a dark jacket with a heavy, fur-collared red velvet cloak draped over his shoulder, looks casually off to the side, with the palpable self-certainty of a gentleman of the period. The rapid strokes comprising his necktie and the highlights of the costume display a Lawrencian confidence, which is especially manifest in the young man's refined, handsome face. His entire face, the eyes and skin most of all, displays remarkable depth, punctuated by small dashes of brighter color that bring him to life. Though the identity of the sitter has been lost, his face does not appear in Lawrence's own oeuvre, leading us to believe that this gentleman was instead immortalized by a now equally anonymous painter, albeit one notably skilled in his own right, and clearly familiar with the work of the master, Lawrence. Condition Report: Lined canvas. Mild frame abrasion at edges. A vertical line of apparent repair in upper left quadrant. Some yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout, with a few scattered instances of more pronounced cracking. Not examined out of frame. Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green. Retouching to aforementioned repairs fluoresces. Finely applied strengthening to the white highlights on the figure's nose and to the red pigments of his lips and the top of his proper right shoulder. Scattered dots and dashes of more brushy retouching appear above and below the varnish layer, primarily affecting the background and the lower half of the figure's cloak. Framed Dimensions 36.75 X 31.5 X 3.5 Inches
