PROPERTY OF NIAGARA UNIVERSITY
CLAUDE VENARD
1913 - 1999
SCÈNE PORTUAIRE DE NUIT

Signed C.Venard (lower left)
Oil on canvas
39½ by 39½ in. (100.3 by 100.3 cm)
Framed: 41 by 41 in. (104.1 by 104.1 cm)

The authenticity of these works has been confirmed by Galerie Félix Vercel.

Condition Report:
The canvas is unlined. There is a network of craquelure throughout the canvas, most notably in the thickest pigments. Pigment shrinkage in the black and white pigments toward the upper right corner. In the thick blue pigment at the center of the bottom edge there are some scattered losses as well as more active cracking. Additional losses to the grey pigments at center left and center right, revealing the red and yellow grounds, respectively. In the upper half of the painting there are scattered stains visible from an uneven application of varnish. Under UV light: At the center of the bottom edge, one t-shaped and one inch long vertical area of inpainting. An additional nail-head sized area of inpainting near the lower left corner. Otherwise, some original pigments fluoresce. This work is in overall good condition.
