Spanish School
17th Century
A Priest and his Companions after an Attack on a Deserted Road
Oil on canvas
22 1/4 x 77 1/8 inches (56.5 x 195.7 cm)
Provenance:
Property of a Florida estate
The subject of this painting is enigmatic: a priest and other men lying on the ground after a brutal attack, perhaps by brigands, perhaps by anti-clerical forces. This unusual subject suggests that the work may depict an actual historical incident, one better known in the 17th century than today.

C Property from the Estate of a Miami Collector

Additional Notes & Condition Report

Perhaps cut down from a larger work. Glue relined. A few repaired holes. Scrapes and small losses, including a long slash in the canvas near the center of the upper edge, and several long, horizontal scrapes a few inches below that same edge (visible in the photographs). Some dark areas restored, including the sole of the fallen man's shoe visible in the center foreground; and the hair of the man wearing a blue shirt. Drapery shadows reinforced.
Curiously, the painting is framed backwards.

Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact and Doyle New York shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. Please contact the specialist department to request further information or additional images that may be available.
