Statue (2) - Wood - Adorant de Bouddha - Burma - Early 20th century

[ translate ]

Description: Burmese statuettes representing monks, disciples of Buddha, these statuettes were offered by followers to pay tribute to him, in lacquered wood, gilded with gold foil. The name of the disciple is inscribed with black lacquer on the base of each statuette. These statuettes were offered by followers and were placed next to the statue of Buddha in temples or monasteries. A complete set includes all 7 statuettes representing the most important disciples who received their teaching from Buddha himself and are venerated in Burma. Depending on the donors’ wealth, they could donate a single statuette or several ones. Around the early 20th century, region of Bagan. These statuettes are of very nice quality, both by the lacquering and the gilding with gold foil, and by the sculpture work, done with rudimentary tools, making it more complex than it seems. 18. 5 cm high by 9. 5 cm wide. Very ancient and decorative objects. Travel Diary of Jean Dumoulin: I purchased these objects just before the sad events that hit Burma, first covid and then the coup. I had never expected receiving them one day, until an e-mail confirming that the items were on a ship at sea. Condition: Fair condition for an object of this period, but it presents traces of its age, a few minor lacks, including on one of the hands (have a look at the pictures) . Careful and insured shipment with track & trace via Bpost.
