From the collection of "Calcite Charlie" Charles Potter. The most glamorous and successful of the salesmen was Charles Potter, who came to the Steuben Glass Works in about 1906 or 1907 and continued to be Carder's ace representative until about 1932. A tall, lithe man, Potter had a handsome aquiline nose, enhanced in his later years by an elegant pince-nez. With his expensively tailored clothes, courtly manners, and charming personality, he became known as the 'man who kept Steuben running.' So large were is sales of Calcite glass lamps and shades when these were introduced about 1915 that customers and competitors alike affectionately dubbed him 'Calcite Charlie.' P. 33 Gardner.
