A highly collectible Victorian Straits Settlements silver issue, offered here in elusive Mint State preservation. Examples of the 1896 Fifty Cents are most frequently encountered with extensive circulation wear, making fully uncirculated survivors increasingly difficult to source, particularly as collector demand for high-grade Straits silver continues to strengthen.
This NGC MS61 example retains substantial original mint lustre beneath attractive silver-grey surfaces, with the devices and legends remaining boldly defined throughout. The portrait of Queen Victoria is well preserved, while the reverse denomination and wreath exhibit the sharpness expected of a true Mint State coin.
Of particular significance is its standing within the certified population, with seven examples having the same grade and four coins certified finer, placing this piece firmly within the upper echelon of surviving examples available to collectors.
The 1896 issue represents one of the key late nineteenth-century dates within the series, and examples at this level of preservation are encountered far less frequently than population figures alone would suggest. Many survivors display impairments, subdued surfaces or evidence of past cleaning, making problem-free Mint State examples increasingly sought after by advanced collectors of British colonial coinage.
