This engraving, Plate 5 from Volume V, depicts two antique objects labeled Lamps (Lampes). The upper figure illustrates an unusual lamp stand featuring a bust of a bearded, laurel-wreathed figure mounted on a stylized bird's foot with large talons. The lower figure shows a detailed top-down view of a classical Roman oil lamp (Lucerna). The print originated from an encyclopedic antiquarian work documenting classical artifacts. Bernard de Montfaucon was a highly influential French Benedictine scholar and antiquarian of the early Enlightenment. He is best known for his monumental illustrated work, L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, which extensively cataloged and classified ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, establishing him as a founder of modern archaeology.
