Since the 1980s, the American artist Sue Williams has addressed themes of power and oppression, gender relations, and body politics in her paintings.
A humiliating Day from 1995 features explicit scenes in a comic-like style, depicting women subjected to sexual oppression. Fragmented and dissolved, figures and suggested scenes float across the canvas, pointing to their disturbing message.
The most comprehensive retrospective of Sue Williams’ œuvre to date, spanning five decades of her career and titled 'What Now,' is currently on view at Belvedere 21 until June 7, 2026."
