Sugar caster - .800 silver - Germany - Late 19th century

Outstanding sugar bowl, in vermeil inside. Made in the Rococo style by Posen Lazarus Witwe (widow) of Berlin (Germany) . Model no. : 62268. Hallmarks: silver fineness 800, silversmith mark L. POSEN. Tested. With engraved initials inside a cartouche: “Fd. B”. In perfect condition and flawless. Dimensions: 13 x 17 x 14 cm. Weight: 445 grams. The Posen company was founded in Frankfurt in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, widow of Lazarus Jacob Posen, a silversmith and jeweller of Polish descent. Under the widow Posen’s stewardship, the firm became the largest supplier of Judaica in the late 19th century. Her son Jacob L. Posen joined the firm by 1880, and by 1900, the company’s large staff of chasers and engravers were producing some of the finest silver in the country. They received a royal warrant in 1903. In the 20th century the firm was under the direction of Brendina’s grandsons Jakob, Hermann and Moritz Posen. This wealthy Jewish-owned firm was forced to close in 1938, after being a victim in the Kristallnacht, perpetrated by the Nazi regime.
