An elegant heavy black marble suiseki 水石 (scholar’s stone) with an intricate matrix in different shades of green, grey and white. The very smooth surface and edges enhance the image of a gentle mountain ridge. The natural line-play gives the imagination a lot to play with. As if on the top of the mountain there are different layers of snow, because of the various horizontal white lines. Or that the thicker green lines downward represent patches of trees following natural path down the ‘valleys’ of the mountain. The stone is placed on a custom made blackened wooden base 台座 (daiza) . Height with daiza 21. 1 cm, Width 59. 6 cm, Depth 22. 4 cm. Weight 14. 25 kg In traditional Japanese culture, suiseki are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are appreciated for their aesthetic or decorative value. These stones are not just any stones which can be found in nature; they must be expressive stones and have a special shape, color and texture to be categorized as suiseki. There is a distinction between landscape and object stones. The former reflect landscapes such as mountains, lakes or rivers, while other stones have object shapes that resemble animals or sculptures. The stones are of natural origin and are found in rivers, oceans and karst areas. They are not allowed to be reshaped. (From Wikipedia)
