THOMAS HART BENTON
Planting.
Lithograph, 1939. 255x320 mm; 10x12 1/2 inches, wide margins. Edition of 250. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. A very good, dark impression.
Benton (1889-1975) created this lithograph after the same-titled painting, based on a drawing he did in southern Arkansas. About the scene he wrote, "the man plows, the woman sows. Common enough scene up to very lately." He was wistful regarding the slow disappearance of these traditional farming practices, yet stated hopefully that the "old ways don't die easily". Fath 28.
