Tall 20th C. PNG Papuan Gulf Wood Ancestor Figure

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Papuan Gulf, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A stunning and sizeable hand-carved wood figure depicted standing atop an integral plinth and wearing a stylized mask, all adorned in red, white, and black pigments. The tall figure displays muscular legs, a lengthy body, and slender arms that fall from sloped shoulders. His hands lay folded together at his narrow hips, as his fascinating vizard exhibits a jagged periphery, a smiling mouth, an openwork, beak-like nose, and inlaid cowrie shell eyes. Size: 9.75" W x 43.25" H (24.8 cm x 109.9 cm)

Provenance: private Englewood, Colorado, USA collection; ex-M. Komor Gallery, New York, New York, USA, circa 1965

Condition Report: Chips to base. Stable fissures to base, proper left arm, torso and back of head. Some nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, excellent with nice patina and impressive remaining pigments.
