Tambo Quemado Meteorite Slice Iron, IIIAB Peru Found: 1950 Tambo Quemado might not be familiar to many people but is one quite interesting meteorite. The Iron was found then reported in 1950 and is one of only a handful of classified meteorites from Peru and the only approved meteorite from the city of Ayacucho. This seminal offering consists of an exquisite slice weighing just over 2 kilograms (5 pounds) with an irregular roundish shape and adequate thickness. This massive etched slab displays a network of Thomson structures providing an intense Widmanstätten patterning. Several large circular inclusions of Troilite give this, otherwise relatively uniform, slice a most artistic appeal and effectively turn the meteorite piece into a work of contemporary art. The mineral is a rare variety, and the unusual round or oval inclusions are often associated with meteorites. This higher end slice contains superb blebs of Troilte, and such inclusions would have made the slab that much harder to cut and prepare for display. The brownish natural rind on the edge of the form adds a level of contrast.
