Laying the groundwork for the Pop Art movement, Jasper Johns regularly references popular imagery in his work. Recalling his consistent use of the target symbol, this editioned ‘Target’ was published to commemorate the 1971 ’Technics and Creativity: Gemini G.E.L.’ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Uncolored and presented with a real paintbrush and three watercolor paint pads, the print implies that anyone can create a Johns’ target if given the right tools. This work is accompanied by the original exhibition catalogue.
