Tea box - Louis XVI - Boxwood, Brass, Ebony, Mahogany - 1790-1800

A late 18th century tea box, manufactured during the Dutch Louis XVI period about 1790-1800. The tea box is made up of oak & mahogany and glued with mahogany veneer. The tea box is decorated with a single piece of boxwood and a block frame of boxwood & ebony. The front has an oval marquetry work of a scale with flowering blossoms made of boxwood and green coloured maple wood. The original refined brass handle is richly decorated with a. o. pearl edges and range motifs. On the inside there is a solid mahogany cover with facet/bevelled edges, provided with brass knob and on the underside thick lead foil. Almost the entire inside of the tea box is still lined with the original lead foil. All the mountings, i. e. hinges, lock and lock plate are original, the eye itself and a working key are unfortunately missing. The inside of the lid and the underside of the tea box are lined with dark green fabric. The entire tea box has a warm colour and has its authentic wax finish, which gives the whole a beautiful silky gloss!
