LOT 83006997

Teapot - Clobbered - Porcelain

[ translate ]

A fine 18th century porcelain teapot, measuring 18cm in width and weighing 289g, decorated in underglaze blue and subsequently overpainted (clobbered) in Europe, probably in the Netherlands which had a reputation for embelleshing Chinese blue and white porcelain with red and other colours, to resemble the more popular Imari decors of the time. Often the overpainting had little or nothing to do with the underlying décor, in this example the overpainter has at least made an attempt to follow the blue décor to an extent. Another centre of overpainting was London, often characterized by the presence of green enamel in the overcoat.

Condition: Chips to the spout, lid replaced, otherwise good. No hairlines or cracks detected. Fritting, minor wear.

This lot will be carefully packaged and sent by registered and insured mail.
