The Death of Pyrrhus, Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson

[ translate ]

Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson
Montargis 1767 - 1824 Paris
The Death of Pyrrhus

oil on paper, mounted on canvas
canvas: 10 1/4 by 14 3/4 in.; 26 by 37.5 cm.
framed: 18 1/2 by 23 5/8 in.; 47 by 60 cm.

Condition Report:
The painting is on a sheet of paper laid onto a stretched canvas which has not been relined. Overall the painting is in very good condition; the colors are bright, the paint sits nicely on the surface, and there is a thin, even varnish. There are a a handful of areas, particularly in the lower left quadrant and at center, where the paint is particularly thick with impasto; these are very well-preserved. There are a few areas of thin craqueleure which can be seen under raking light but are not noticeable to the naked eye. In areas like the lower right corner where the paint is thin, this is an intentional device on the part of the artist and not due to abrasion or fading. Under ultraviolet light the varnish appears milky and there are no notable restorations which flouresce. The painting can be hung as is and is offered in a carved giltwood frame.
