"The King Edward Cup", an engraved glass two-handled cup celebrating the coronation of Edward VIII, by Thomas Goode & Co Ltd, 1937, the cover with crown finials, engraved with the crowned cypher of Edward VIII and the crowned Regnal name and coronation dates of his homonymous predecessors, the body titled and inscribed THE CORONATION OF EDWARD VIII, KING EMPEROR, MAY 12TH 1937 / ACCESSION JANUARY 20TH 1936 / BY EARTH, SEA OR AIR/OUR KING LEADS US THE WAY/AS FRIENDS OF HIS PEOPLE/THEY CROWN HIM TO DAY/ BIRTH JUNE 23RD 1894, the hollow stem enclosing a coin on a square foot engraved with lion masks, inscriptions for ENGLAND, IRELAND, WALES and SCOTLAND and their respective national flowers, further inscribed to the underside 42 ONLY OF THESE NUMBERED VASES MADE THIS IS No 31, THOMAS GOODE & CO LTD, LONDON, COPYRIGHT No3202 NOVEMBER 20TH 1936, HERBERT GOODE, 29cm high, 21cm wide Provenance: Purchased in 1936 by the grandmother and step-grandfather of the current owner. Note: The design for the `King Edward Cup` is recorded in the volume of the Thomas Goode archive dedicated to the wares produced for Edward VIII coronation. Included is a letter from the company dated November 1936 stating "The piece has been made after surmounting manufacturing difficulties, and the engraving thereon is the finest it has been possible to obtain." An other example numbered 38 sold Sotheby's, 8 January 2021, lot 11, £3780.
