The chest with incised initials I L on the front of the top drawer for the first owner, Jane Lambert.
With typed label on interior of top drawer This old chest belonged to Jane Lambert, wife of Francis Lambert. They lived in Rowely. In her will (Probate records of Essex Co. Mass. 1659) she left this chest and its contents to her daughter Ann Lambert who the same year married Thomas Nelson. It has been in use in the family ever since and descended to Elisabeth Mighill Nelson Bateman, sister of Humphrey Nelson who willed it to me wife of Arthur Lambert Chute. I have given it to my daughter Mary Chute McMurtrie who is a direct descendant from Jane Lambert in the 10th generation in both Nelson and Lambert lines. It is supposed to have been made in Ipswich.

An additional pencil inscribed note states Will May 24, 1659. I give unto my daughter, Anne Lambert, the great chest and all that is in it and one trunk and all that is in it the one till box and all that is in it. / Proved in Ipswich Court 27-7-1659. / Inventory taken 22-6-1659 / 1 table box Chest Trunk 3 (insert British pounds currency symbol) 5 sh 4d. The lower most drawer's sides back and bottom replaced.

Condition Report:
In overall very fine condition. Lacking several hardware pulls. Bottom drawer with replaced sides and back of bottom board. Secondary wood: white pine.
