Property from the Estate of Nelson Shanks
Follower of Guido Reni
The Madonna and Child at a table with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and a landscape beyond

oil on copper
copper: 7⅞ by 4¾ in; 20 by 12.1 cm.
framed: 15¾ by 13¼ in.; 40 by 33.7 cm.

Condition Report:
The copper plate is uncradled, stable, and relatively planar, with some very faint undulations at the corner. The reverse of the copper has remnants of an old adhesive. The paint layer is stable, though the surface is somewhat dirty. Some abrasion is concentrated at the edges of the copper sheet. There are retouches to the figures and the background, for example, some small spots and strokes in the flesh tones and costumes figures as well as some scattered spots in the background elements such as the sky at upper right. Some of these retouches have faintly discolored and are visible to the naked eye, and these retouches are further revealed through ultraviolet light. UV light also reveals a milky varnish and more than one campaign of restoration, and there are some more recent isolated strokes in the curtain at upper left and in the folds of the fabric at left. Offered in a gilded and painted tabernacle frame.
