First state, with scarce original 19th century dust jacket. The first published appearance of the title poem was issued as a 4 pp. supplement to the Sunday Examiner.

Markham's best kown poem was inspired by Jean-François Millet's painting L'homme à la Houe, interpreted as a socialist protest about the peasant's plight. The poem was first presented as a public poetry reading at a New Year's Eve party in 1898.
Condition Report: Some general light wear to jacket with some small chips and closed tears to edges, a few small areas of loss to front panel; dampstain to top corner of last 10 leaves and rear endpapers; very good or better in very good jacket.
