LOT 115

The Virgin and Child: 'The Madonna of the Cherries', Workshop of Joos van Cleve

[ translate ]

Property from a Distinguished Spanish Private Collection
Workshop of Joos van Cleve
Cleve (?) Date Unknown - 1540/1 Antwerp
The Virgin and Child: 'The Madonna of the Cherries'

oil on oak panel
unframed: 47.7 x 39.9 cm.; 18¾ x 15¾ in.
framed: 60 x 51 cm.; 23⅝ x 20⅛ in.

Condition Report:
The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty with a clear and even varnish. There is slight frame abrasion along the upper margin. Under raking light, a few repaired, vertical surface splits or joins are just visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some small retouchings along one of these splits in the upper left corner (approx. 10cm. long) which fluoresce lightly. There appear to be further small retouchings scattered in the curtain which also fluoresce lightly. There is also scattered retouching along a vertical split or join starting near the lower right corner which extends up to the Virgin's shoulder - this fluoresces darkly. The majority of the composition is very well preserved with only few and very small spot retouchings.

Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.
