Théo de Gueltzl, born in 1993, is a French artist who works in photography, drawing, and sculpture, and whose work explores the various connections between the body and space. He lives and works between Arles and Paris. After earning a B.A. in Fine Art with a specialization in Sculpture from Central Saint Martins School in London in 2014, he embarked on a three-year journey across the Americas. Starting from Los Angeles, California, he traveled through Mexico and Central America, eventually settling in Bogotá, where he founded a community artists’ studio in La Calera (a northern suburb of the city located at an altitude of 3,000 meters) from March 2016 to April 2018. This experience raised his awareness of the many issues facing Colombia, particularly the threats to Indigenous communities and their forced internal displacement within the country. He then conducted in-depth research on the diversity of their ways of life, their connections to the environment, the challenges they face, and their ability to adapt to change. Since then, he has been working on a long-term hybrid photographic and cinematic project that poetically documents the phenomena of syncretism and acculturation among the indigenous peoples of this region of the world. Sculptural forms in the natural world are an endless source of inspiration in Théo de Gueltzl’s practice. Working exclusively with analog photography (medium and large format), his imagery embodies a dreamlike aesthetic of portraiture and landscape, and his empathetic and collaborative approach with his subjects celebrates cultural diversity. Since 2020, he has been developing both personal and commissioned photographic work in the fashion world. His series are regularly published in the specialized press (M Le magazine du Monde, Wall Street Journal, AnOther, Document Journal, Atmos, Vogue).
