Lot of 3 items related to Theo. Winters. Winters was an early settler of the Carson Valley in Nevada and a prominent land owner, rancher, and horse owner in Washoe Valley. He also was involved in early Comstock mining claims. His brother Joseph Winters was one of the first to purchase a share of the mine that became the Ophir Silver Mining Co. He split it with his other two brothers, John D., and Theodore. Winters, CA is named for him. He unsuccessfully tried to run for Nevada governor in 1890. 1) Placerville & St. Joseph Overland Telegraph Company. Offices at Placerville, Genoa, Strawberry Valley, Carson City, & Virginia City. Dated in Sacramento, April 13th, 1860. Message to his wife about going to SF. Rare telegraph form! 2) California State Telegraph Co. San Francisco, 1863. Message from his brother John to Theo. about the sale of "ground" (maybe a mining claim) for 160,000. John Winters was believed to be involved in the mysterious death of Comstock assayer Conrad Wiegand, which was ruled a suicide, but many suspected was foul play. 3) Application from the Surveyor General & Land Register, Carson, 1877.
