First edition, printed at the second press at Rome, of commentaries on the Pauline epistles—in a contemporary Italian binding. The Byzantine scholar Theophylact's Biblical commentaries were influential on Thomas Aquinas, and later Erasmus. The translator, Cristoforo Persona, dedicated the work to Pope Sixtus IV and was appointed Vatican librarian only a few later, in 1484. Median folio (326 x 217mm). 278 leaves. (Dampstaining and spotting, small tear to one leaf with loss of a few letters, outer bifolium of last gathering reinforced at gutter, removed stamp/repair on first leaf, just touching text.) Contemporary Italian morocco over wooden boards with blindtooled knotwork design, brass catchplates and straps (worn, hinges showing, text block cracked, top spine panel repaired). Provenance: Matteo and Leo Motelli (inscriptions dated May 1535) – acquired from Menno Hertzberger and Co, Amsterdam, 18 May 1966.
