Director William Cameron Menzies, who was also a renowned production designer best known for his work on Gone With the Wind (1939), created a futuristic atmosphere which uniquely illustrated Wells' tale of a world where war is dominant and technology is advanced. Produced by Alexander Korda, a major player in the British film industry, the film stresses the importance of science and progress in a world where war has taken over. Wells' vision of the future turned out to be accurate in many ways, both positive and negative, and the film is still considered one of the greatest and purest of science fiction films, the standard against which others are compared.
