Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA, British 1803-1902- Cattle and sheep at a watering place; oil on canvas, signed 'T.S. Cooper. R.A.' (lower right), 110.8 x 88 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 9 December 2020, lot 144.; Private Collection, Germany. Note: The present work is a particularly charming example of the cattle scenes for which Cooper was best known (earning him the epithet ‘Cow Cooper’). It is imbued with an overall sense of tranquillity and peace, emphasised by the placement of the cattle and sheep together, yet evidently undisturbed by one another’s company. This sense of calm is also suggested by the flat surface of the water on the composition’s left and the absence of human figures.
