Three Pillows Mola Textile of the Cuna (Kuna) Indians, Sun Blas Island, Panama
Ca. first half 20th century, multilayer geometric and figural multicolor design, as pillow tops with maroon velvet backing. Two with cross motifs, 12-1/14" x 17 ¾" and 15"x 19"; and python motif, 15"x 18". Hand made by Kuna women, elaborately designed and painstakingly sewn cloth panels stitched in appliqué.
Provenance: Gus and Mimi Bizic "Mola Woman" lifetime private collection, Sewickley, PA, by descent, and then to current owner; acquired at Panama in 1970, The Kapp Kuna Expedition Collection.
