Tray - Teak wood & woven bamboo - 90 cms!!! - Spectaculaire Kalat - Burma - Early 20th century
DESCRIPTION Spectacular "kalat" which served as trays for meals, the guests sat around and shared the food that was placed on it. Burma, early 20th century. It is an exceptional piece due to its size, 90 cms in diameter and 50 cms in height but also because it has its imposing woven and lacquered bamboo cover. This is the largest antique lacquer piece I have collected in my 30 years of traveling in Burma. Old and very decorative object. JEAN DUMOULIN'S TRAVEL LOG In Burma, when I am invited to eat, we are always seated on the floor, around a low table on which the food is laid out, which, for someone who, like me, is not flexible, can become quickly complicated and uncomfortable. But this is compensated by the kindness of the welcome and by the discovery of sometimes surprising local flavors. STATE This tray is in fair condition, it bears traces of its age and especially of its use, cracks, old relaquering, local restoration (see photos) but it is stable. PLEASE NOTE, given the size and fragility of the object, it must be collected in Brussels, transport possible in Belgium.
