A rare and beautifully presented 1956 limited edition book featuring iconic Ukiyo-e "Bijin-ga" (pictures of beautiful women) by the celebrated Edo-period artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806) . Published by Nihon Bijutsu-sha, this exclusive edition was limited to only 1000 copies and comes elegantly housed in its original paulownia wood box.
Kitagawa Utamaro is widely regarded as one of Japan’s greatest masters of ukiyo-e. Initially trained under Toriyama Sekien, Utamaro gained immense popularity in the 1790s for his exquisitely rendered depictions of women, capturing their subtle beauty and grace with delicate lines and sophisticated colour compositions.
This set includes a hardcover book containing both original woodblock prints and printed illustrations. It uniquely begins from the opposite side of the Japanese title, featuring 9 pages of English explanatory text, enhancing accessibility and appreciation for international collectors.
Additionally, the edition comes with three supplementary standalone woodblock prints, which further highlight Utamaro's artistry and refined technique.
The numbering of this limited edition copy is missing, a rare oversight adding to its distinctiveness.
