Tsuba (1) - Cast iron - wild goose - Antique Tsuba for Samurai Sword with NBTHK Certificate (T-248) - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

Certificate: NBTHK Signature: NO SIGNED Circle-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Wild geese are engraved with Sukashi (openwork) technique. The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents fall. Its pattern is also called "Karigane" and used for family crests. The design that describes wild gooses are flying is named "Gankou Mon. " This bird is engraved by not only a realistic figure but also a very simplified shape: Hiragana (a kind of Japanese letter) "he" shape that sometimes makes also wild goose. According to its certificate, this Tsuba was created by Echizen Akao school's maker. Echizen is the Fukui prefecture today. Akao-style Tsuba is popular until today. This Tsuba is recognized by The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, which is known as NBTHK.
