Tumaco La Tolita Pottery Fish-Form Grater
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tumaco region, La Tolita, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A fine, hand-built effigy grater (rollador) of an abstract fish form. The ovoid body has a pointed tail and roughly triangular head, with the body scooped out on one side to form a series of tight, high ridges within a border. Used to grate various vegetables and to descale fish, effigy graters like this example were utilized in the Tumaco region of what is now Colombia by the Tolita culture. Size: 13.2" W x 3.4" H (33.5 cm x 8.6 cm)
