[ translate ]

"Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven", by Mark Twain, with frontispiece picture of Captain Stormfield aboard his comet "Space Ship" by Albert Levering; published by Harper & Brothers, New York. First Printing of the First Edition with 'MCMIX' (1909) imprinted on the title page, no Harper code, "Published October, 1909" on the copyright page. References: BAL 3511; Smith T-433.

Hard boards, original red cloth with white lettering and Captain Stormfield aboard his comet "Space Ship" on front board [a little shelf wear, stain from removed label on spine: see photo]; 5.1/2" x 8", discarded library book with vintage label inside front cover, residues and surface damages from removed labels on the endpapers and inside back cover, the endpapers are creased at the hinges, frontispiece picture with tissue guard; 121 pages, a little soiling, good condition. See photos.

This classic satire of the 'Captain's Log' genre in which Stormfield dies and passes through the pearly gates "whizzing through space like a comet!" was the last book Twain published during his lifetime; he worked on the story for almost forty years. Two chapters from the middle of the novel were finally published in Harper's Monthly in December 1907 and January 1908 and collected in book form the following year. Combining science fiction with a satiric look at conventional views of the afterlife, Twain delivers his amusing and trenchant commentary on human vanity.
