Two Needlework Articles: Picture & Sampler. The first a Pennsylvania German needlework picture stitched in wool on linen, with strawberry and vine border, enclosing a version of Adam & Eve in typical 1830s dress, under a flowering tree, under glass in carved giltwood frame. _x000B__x000B_The second, a Mid Atlantic sampler, wool on linen, with a band of xs enclosing flowerheads, over a capital alphabet, lower case alphabet, numbers 1 - 10, two other other alphabets in cross stitch, over Martha W. Branin's / work done AD 1832; under glass in carved, ebonized and copper enamel frame. Label of HARROLD E. GILLINGHAM, 432 West Price Street, GERMANTOWN, PHILADELPHIA to reverse of the first; McLEES GALLERIES/ 1507 WALNUT ST./PHILADELPHIA to the second. 1830s. {Approximate dimensions: 6 x 6 3/4 inches, sight; 8 x 9 inches framed; 8 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches, sight; 9 1/2 x 9 inches, framed.}. Provenance: Gillingham was an avid early collector of Americana; and McLees has been in business for over 150 years. Condition: The basic condition of these items is very good. Both have fading to colors; and the second has three small stains or splotches, by the identifying lines at the bottom. Tears to paper backs of frames. Both articles probably mounted on acidic paper or wood.
