Rhode Island Ship Token, 1779. Pewter. Obv: map of Aquidneck, Rhode Island, depicting the American forces retreating from three British ships, with wreath below ship. Rev: Admiral Howe's flagship right, with wreath below. Unsigned (perhaps of Dutch origin) . This pewter Rhode Island token (examples exist in pewter, brass and copper - both brass and pewter examples are rare) is an important testimony of the Colonials private tokens. Eight varieties are known, this example being part of the "Wreath Below the ship" varieties. Provenance: Metal detecting find, found in 2006 (domestic waste Leiden) and registered. The token has been examined by an archaeologist of the Archaeological Service Amsterdam, correspondence will be included. The concerning archaeologist found a similar token and wrote a publication on it, which will be included as well.
