Head and shoulders portrait of gentleman in a wig, labelled verso 'Samuel Swinton Captain RN' ( died in 1799), oval gilt mount, 19cm x 15cm, within gilt frame (damaged)
Baroness Orczy when she wrote the Scarlet Pimpernell in 1905, loosely based the story of the hero, Sir Percy Blakeney on the life of Samuel Swinton, who, whilst in France during the French revolution, assisted in the escape some of the nobility who were in danger of going to the guillotine. ("They seek him here, they seek him there ..."!)
